Case study: Asset verification with RFID scanning x Resco mobile Inspections+ app

Learn how Marlon Salinas from NOV built integrated RFID scanning into their mobile app for field technicians and reduced asset verification time by 75%.

What you’ll learn

  • First hand account of how NOV approached upgrading the asset verification process for 12,000 active assets deployed in harsh field environments.
  • NOV chose RFID scanning over barcodes due to problems with drilling mud, prompting Resco to create a proof of concept mobile app for field techs and visit NOV’s test rig for field technician feedback before deployment.
  • NOV technicians now save 75% of time they spent verifying assets because they are able to just point and scan assets without manually entering serial numbers – saving them lots of manual errors and return trips.
  • Scanning improved NOV’s billing accuracy, flagging assets located on the wrong rig. Listen to more details in the video.

What functionality does the custom mobile inspection app have?

NOV has been using Resco since 2018 and has four distinct Field Service+ app projects. The new functionality was added to their existing mobile CRM app for field technicians.

  • Embedded RFID functionality: A custom button was embedded into the Resco app’s asset verification form to connect the Zebra scanners RFD4031 to the Resco mobile CRM app.
  • Full support for the scanner commands was added to the Resco app.
  • 5–10-foot scanning range: A single trigger pull of the handheld device captures multiple nearby assets.
  • Three-table verification system: Scanned asset tags run through a verification table, and as soon as they find a match, they fall off the list for the technician to verify. If it does not find a match, it runs through the warehouse inventory table and the rig inventory tables.
  • Location discrepancy alerts: The systems flags assets found in unexpected locations and alerts technicians to get the assets where they are supposed to be.

Any NOV field technician can now use the RFID scanning capabilities. Internal demand for learning more about this project is growing across other NOV business units, and Marlon’s team is planning to expand this functionality to more processes as RIFD regulations permit, including asset issuing/retrieval and batch operations.
